The Boxcar Tavern is one of our favorite Washington, DC restaurants. A cozy neighborhood spot across the street from the Eastern Market, it charms from the get-go with hardwood floors, dark leather booths and one of the friendliest wait staffs in town. Its extensive American food options, wine and beer lists invites a wide variety of eaters, drinkers and families to have a great night out at the Boxcar Tavern.
Located in Capitol Hill, the Boxcar Tavern is just a half-mile from the Capitol Hill Hotel. Guests can take an easy five-minute drive or ten-minute walk from their guest rooms, or stop by after a day exploring all of the iconic monuments and memorials on the National Mall. The Boxcar tavern is also within walking distance of the Capitol Riverfront and National’s Park.
WHAT TO TRY
When getting things started at the Boxcar Tavern, we suggest something to share. The pulled pork nachos feature slow-cooked meat atop a bed of cheddar and Swiss cheese with black beans, jalapenos and sour cream for a classic, juicy bite. Parmesan truffle fries are a pungent, easy-to-share option that truly comes to life with a sweet house ketchup.
Moving to the main course, you can choose between sandwiches and classic entrees. The Boxcar Tavern does an unflawed rendition of the French Dip with thin cut roast beef, melted provolone and an au jus that really makes the sandwich pop. They also do haddock, pulled pork and tuna tacos. If you’re looking for full dish, give the fisherman’s stew with mussels, shrimp, scallops, haddock and crostinis a shot.
