This year’s male competitors include American favorite, John Isner, Australian veteran Lleyton Hewitt, and rising Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov. Tennis pros battling for the woman’s gold include Eugenie Bouchard (CAN), Sloane Stephens (USA), and Ekaterina Makarova (RUS). The Open Tennis Classic will take place at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center located on 16th and Kennedy Streets. If you catch the metro right outside the Capitol Hill Hotel, you can be at the grounds in less than an hour. Tickets are still available for sale and can be purchased here
Classified as an ATP World Tur 500 event, the Citi Open Tennis Classic will award $1.5 million in prize money and will be televised internationally. The Citi Open Tennis Classic also supports the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation (WTEF), an organization committed to assisting low income youth in the D.C. areas with tennis and other educational activities.
In addition to watching some great matches, the Open Tennis Classic is hosting a variety of special evening events including a Grand Marnier craft cocktail happy hour and a District-themed Trivia night. If you’re more interested in a fun summer activity for the kids, check out the Junior Team Tennis Day on July 29th. Participants are given the unique opportunity to spend the afternoon playing tennis with this year’s Open Tennis Classic competitors. They will also receive coaching from Wayne Bryan, renowned head coach to the champion doubles duo, Mike and Bob Bryan. Following the clinic, these lucky juniors will watch the Men and Women’s Main Draw afternoon matches.
