Summer Break on Capitol Hill: How Kids Have Fun in DC

The kids are out of school, and they are eager to get out in the world and enjoy themselves. At the same time, parents deserve a vacation just as much as anybody. Washington, DC is one of the country’s best family destinations. Think the little ones will get bored in the city? Fear not. We’ve got a few suggestions on ways for kids to have fun in DC. (An added bonus: Capitol Hill Hotel’s spacious suites allow children and adults to spread out without having to book two rooms during their stay in Washington, DC.)

Free Museums

Washington, DC is home to some of the best museums in the world, many of which are completely free visit. The iconic Smithsonian Institute is a great starting point, with kid friendly options like the National Air and Space Museum, which has the world’s largest collection of historic spacecrafts and aircrafts. The National History Museum is another choice that’s sure to impress young ones, who can proudly return home having seen the world’s biggest blue diamond and a live coral reef.

Exploring the Mall

The National Mall is massive, lined with monuments and iconic buildings on all sides. Seeing the Capitol Building, the White House, and the Lincoln Memorials, sites that every child has seen in textbooks and on TV, is often the highlight of any visitor’s vacation in DC. The distances between the monuments can be tiresome for children. Take a few Capitol Hill Hotel’s stylish Republic Bikes, which are free to rent, around the Mall to turn the day into a fun outing, stopping when and where you want!

Parents might be rolling their eyes at the notion that history would be a draw for a child on summer vacation. In our experience, however, we’ve found that kids are usually fascinated  by the sense of history that’s tangible throughout Washington, DC. Don’t believe us? Put it to the test and come see just how much fun your kids will have in Washington DC at the Capitol Hill Hotel.
