Capitol Hill’s Secret Blooms: A Guide to DC’s Best Cherry Blossoms Without the Tidal Basin Crowds

As winter ends and temperatures begin to rise each spring, D.C. locals know that can only mean one thing.

After months of record-breaking cold, winter is finally warming in Washington, D.C. For locals and hordes of global travelers, that can only mean one thing: cherry blossom season is on its way. Visitors flock to D.C. from far and wide, just to catch a glimpse of these vibrant blooms in person. Most of them head straight for the famous Tidal Basin, but this year, we’ll let you in on a little secret…Capitol Hill is better. Way more relaxed and just as stunning, Capitol Hill swaps the crowds with quiet parks and monuments framed by pink-hued Kwanzan trees, offering a picturesque setting without the cherry-chasing chaos.

When you stay at Capitol Hill Hotel, those famous peachy blooms are only steps away, along with iconic landmarks like the National Mall and Union Station. Here are some of our favorite ways to enjoy the cherry blossoms like a D.C. local.

Parks Just Beyond Our Door

Just a 15-minute walk from our hotel, Stanton Park is an excellent starting point to seek out the famous sakura. The residential setting keeps the atmosphere peaceful, even during peak bloom. Take a pause on a picturesque park bench and admire the scene with a coffee in-hand.

Next, Lincoln Park offers a broader landscape only a few blocks farther. Take in the lush open lawns, stretched beneath flowering branches that brush historic statues. Our advice? Pack a picnic and sprawl out in the afternoon sun.

Scenic Views Without the Rush

Want to keep exploring? Head to the East Potomac Park and Hains Point. Waterfront paths lined with cherry trees create space to walk and snap some photos without feeling crowded or rushed. If you’re a morning person, aim to arrive around 7:00 a.m. The soft light over the river beautifully complements the blush tones of the trees.

The U.S. National Arboretum might not come to mind for cherry blossoms, and that’s exactly why we love it. This location flows easily thanks to wide, open grounds dotted surrounded by different cherry tree varieties. Make it your mission to hop from grove to grove, taking in subtle changes in color and shape.

The Best Cherry Blossom Events in D.C.

A few intentional choices can shape the outcome of your day. Early outings and late afternoon returns often provide the most comfortable light and the quietest surroundings. Weekdays typically feel more relaxed than weekends, particularly in neighborhood parks close to Capitol Hill Hotel. As you’re making your plans, be sure to factor in some of the larger festivals and events dedicated to this special season.

The National Cherry Blossom Festival (March 20-April 12) brings a variety of events that explore the beauty and Japanese culture of these famous blooms. At the Blossom Kite Festival, grassy lawns fill with blossom-themed kites lifting into clear March skies. Petalpalooza looks toward the riverfront with live music and interactive art. The National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade kicks off with marching bands, performances, and grandstand excitement along Constitution Avenue, while Sakura Matsuri invites visitors to explore Japanese street food, traditional crafts, and cultural performances that honor the history behind the trees themselves.

Experiencing even one of these events helps you connect to the excitement of this season, and Capitol Hill offers a calm place to return once the festivities wind down.

Discovering D.C. by Bike

One of the easiest ways to enjoy cherry blossom season like a local is to explore by bike. Spring traffic and limited parking can slow things down, especially near popular viewing areas. Riding allows you to move easily between neighborhoods, follow quieter streets, and stop wherever the blooms look best.

Capitol Hill Hotel makes it simple to get started with complimentary bicycle rentals, available on a first come, first served basis (weather permitting).

Dining and Shopping in Capitol Hill

When you’re not seeking out cherry blossoms, there’s plenty to explore in our neighborhood. Eastern Market is full of interesting shops, ideal for shopping souvenirs. Browse vintage pieces or join creative workshops at Relume with 10% off purchases and classes (thanks to our Explorer’s Pass). Antiochia Home is another local favorite for artisan goods.

There’s no better way to finish bloom-hunting than with delicious food; and D.C. sure has a lot of that. Acclaimed local restaurant The Duck & The Peach offers a modern vibe and plenty of patio seating to soak up the sun. (Pssst…Capitol Hill Hotel guests enjoy a complimentary house cocktail through the Explorer’s Pass when purchasing an entrée!) Nearby La Collina serves up Italian favorites with a complimentary half carafe of wine with purchase—a great way to cap the day close to the hotel.

A Stay That Celebrates SpringAs D.C. locals, we take our cherry blossoms seriously. For the fellow flower-obsessed, our Capitol Hill in Bloom package offers overnight accommodations and tons of sakura-themed extras, like cherry blossom chocolate-covered Oreos from Capital Candy Jar. Daily continental breakfast and late checkout are added perks, inviting more time to enjoy the neighborhood before you head back home.
