Hank’s Oyster Bar is the brainchild of Jamie Leeds, one of DC’s most recognizable and accomplished chefs. Serving what he calls “Urban Beach Food,” the restaurant has received critical praise from renowned publications like Gourmet, Bon Appetit, Food & Wine and The Washington Post. A spacious dining room with red-brick walls and plenty of seating creates an inviting atmosphere perfect for traveling families, date nights and casual lunches.

Located on the iconic stretch of Pennsylvania Avenue, Hank’s Oyster Bar’s Capitol Hill location (there’s also a spot in Dupont) is right by Eastern Market and within walking distance of the National Mall, Washington Navy Yard and Capitol Riverfront. Conveniently, it’s also just a five-minute walk from the Capitol Hill Hotel, making it easy for our guests to sample some of the best seafood the Washington, DC restaurant scene has to offer.

What to Try

Starting off there are several options you can take, but we have to recommend one of the apps inspired by the restaurant’s namesake. You can go straight up with oysters on a half shell—specific types are updated on their chalkboard daily—get crazy with some sake oyster shooters, order them fried, or with bacon for a delicious oysters rockefeller. If slurping isn’t your taste, try a local delicacy in the griddled crab cakes.

When it gets time for the main course, Hank’s Oyster Bar has an enticing bevy of entrees from the land and sea. Sample duck breast or saucy short ribs if you’re feeling hearty. Those looking to keep with Hank’s highly touted seafood reputation should try the creamy lobster roll with Old Bay fries, or a fried Oyster Po’ Boy with house made slaw.

Lastly, wrap things up with a nice cocktail. Hank’s has a number of creative, artisanal cocktails that are fun to name and delightful to drink. One of our favorites, and a must for Princess Bride fans, is called “Hello My Name is Inigo Montoya. You Killed My Father. Prepare to Die.” and it comes with Fidencio Mezcal, Lustau Manzanilla Sherry, orange, lemon, and Ancho Chili paprika salt.
