Capitol Hill Hotel is excitedly awaiting one of Washington DC’s most enjoyable and popular annual arts experience. This spring marks the return of the Smithsonian’s Take 5! Jazz Series. Centered around free, live jazz performances, the event provides each attendee the opportunity to paint on a canvas while enjoying the tunes. The gatherings also feature refreshments from a local cafe and fun board games for children and families.
Of all the Take 5! jazz performers we are looking forward to, the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Ensemble is at the top of the list. Their performance on Thursday, April 16th will feature the ensemble’s interpretation of legendary American composer Billy Strayhorn’s vast musical portfolio. The ensemble itself is the orchestra-in-residence at the National Museum of American History, and their mission is to generate a greater awareness of, and appreciation for, jazz music.
The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Ensemble’s show will take place at the center of the Take 5! Series. Preceding the JME’s performance, the renowned Washington Women in Jazz will play at the Kogod Courtyard: a naturally-lit space featuring bracketed ceilings, poured concrete floors, and impressive floral arrangements.
The series will also present shows entitled An Afternoon of Ella with the Brad Linde Expanded Ensemble, and Organissimo–a jazzy funk-gospel trio. Take 5! will combine all of these extraordinary acts to pay homage to Washington DC’s vast musical history, and to anchor the annual celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month.
