Washington, DC and the DMV area is a tribute to our country’s first president from its own name, to its many landmarks on the National Mall, to its traditions. So there’s obviously going to be a ton of interesting stuff going on during his birthday this President’s Day Weekend. Here’s what we’re looking forward to.

The Capital Orchestra Festival

This President’s Day, Music Celebrations International will take over the Concert Hall of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts with the Capital Orchestra festival. This is the main event of a contest in which four orchestras were selected to perform at what’s considered one of the nation’s most prestigious events of its kind.

Mount Vernon Birthday Celebration

Admission to George Washington’s estate at Mount Vernon will once again be free this President’s Day. Stop by and celebrate the holiday as best you can with a tour of the home of our nation’s first president. There will be some special events including a wreath-laying at George Washington’s grave.

Disney On Ice presents Worlds of Enchantment

If you’re not so into the historical stuff, and you happen to be traveling with the kids in DC on President’s Day, check out Disney On Ice presents Worlds of Enchantment at the Capital One Arena. This medley of Disney characters skating includes The Little Mermaid, the gang from Frozen, and the Cars cars among others.

The Old Town, Alexandria Parade

Near Mount Vernon and Washington, DC, the town of Alexandria, Virginia hosts a parade to honor George Washington every year. It’s the oldest and biggest parade of its kind, and it features a lot of period costumes, and old American songs. It’s also home to the Cherry Challenge, where local restaurants compete for best cherry-based cocktail, appetizer, entree, and dessert.

Go Back In Time at Gadsby’s Tavern

Another President’s Day event in Old Town Alexandria, Gadsby’s Tavern hosts an annual recreation of an iconic celebration of George Washington’s birthday. The day will feature an 18th century banquet, actors in costume, and dancing.
